ORTHOPEDIC TRAUMA (FRACTURE)
Trauma (Fracture) is most common and basic orthopedic problem. Usually associated with vehicular accidents, but can also occur with domestic fall or simple fall from height.
SYMPTOMS
Severe pain, Deformity and Inability to use affected limb.
DIAGNOSIS
Usually digital x-ray is all that needed for the diagnosis but in certain cases it may require CT scan and MRI scan to diagnose / to understand the geometry of the fracture.
As shown in figure fracture can happen in any bone of the body. And most importantly NOT all the fractures require surgery. But after consulting an orthopedic surgeon which ever fracture needs surgery, there are multiple options available for reconstruction like;
- Plate and screws (Locking, Non-locking)
- Intramedullary nail(Rods)
- K-wires
Selection of implant is done depending on the fracture and patients requirements post-surgery.
The fracture implants are available in either SS (Stainless steel)/Titanium variants. We usually prefer High quality Titanium implants as they are more bio friendly and MRI compatible.
All the fracture surgery requires precision to allow early and anatomical healing and to prevent any future deformity or complications.
RECOVERY
After all fracture surgeries require some post-operative rest with/without plaster/brace to operative side, followed by physiotherapy to achieve early maximum post-operative movements and function.
Do we need to remove implant after fracture heals?
Answer: As explained we use high quality low profile titanium implants which are biocompatible and rarely bothers patients .But if at all they are prominent, interferes with movement or patient doesn’t want any foreign material in their body then we strongly recommend to get them removed at 1.5-2 years post-surgery to avoid complications of late removal.
