WHAT IS A KNEE ARTHROSCOPY or KNEE ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERY?
Knee arthroscopy (key hole surgery) is one of the best surgery in terms of patient’s outcome and satisfaction post-surgery. It is done using arthroscope which is inserted through 2-3 small cut into your knee. The arthroscopy gives the doctor a clear view of the inside of your knee. Other medical instruments may also be inserted together with the arthroscopy to carry out the surgery.
DIAGNOSIS OF KNEE ARTHROSCOPY
After clinical examination which is of extreme importance by an expert and radiological investigations to support the clinical diagnosis. MRI of the symptomatic knee (if required) is the gold standard.
SYMPTOMS
- Severe swelling, pain and decreased range of movements
- Inability to put weight on affected side
- Repeated twisting of affected leg
- Locking of knee and repeated snapping sound in knee
INDICATIONS
- For reconstruction of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and/or Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)
- Partial removal/repair of meniscus tear (for complex/Bucket Handle tear)
- For recurrent subluxation/Dislocation of patella repair
- Augment small pieces of broken cartilage in the knee joint (micro fracture, chondroplasty)
- Removal of Baker’s cyst – a swelling behind the knee that is filled with fluid
- For synovectomy in cases of Rheumatoid arthritis, joint inflammation, for taking biopsy
- To assist in fracture reconstruction surgery to visualize joint alignment
Most common indication is ACL reconstruction and/or partial meniscectomy/meniscal repair. Now with recent advances we also have bioabsorbable implants, which cant be detected on X-ray and doesn’t require removal in future.
RECOVERY TIME
As this is a key hole surgery patients have fast painless recovery, most of the patients are able to walk on the very next day putting full weight on operated leg. They are even allowed to bend operated leg till 90 degree, depending on the extent of injury and strength of fixation during surgery.
With due physiotherapy gradually patients are able to achieve pre-injury status with in 3-4 months of surgery and are able to do practically every thing and play all the sports.
SURGERY
Knee arthroscopic surgery usually requires 2-3 days of hospitalization and surgery is done under regional (spinal) anesthesia and patient is usually awake during whole surgery and even can see the surgery (if they wish) on monitor as its done with arthroscope.
